The Natural History of the Senses, written by Diane Ackerman, has inspired all of the art work created in the "Touch Project."
"The Hand"
In this section Ackerman calls the hand "action." She's right, the hand IS action. It creates things, molds one's future, and even touches the ones we love. I have used this idea that the hand is a creator, molder, and tool to create a small photo series to show examples of how a artists hand fits the examples Ackerman has given in her book. The hand is an artists' tool.
On a daily basis it is normal for someone to lose more than 50 to 100 hairs. Ackerman creates a connection between the Earth and hair. "Symbolic of life, hair bolts from the head. Like the earth, it can be harvested, but it will rise again." For this piece, I used my own hair, ink, and paper to create the illusion that my hair is being harvested... as a carrot.
